GE DECISION OVERTURNED
A High Court ruling overturning the Government's Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) decision to accept genetically modified organisms (GMO) applications from AgResearch has been applauded by GE FREE NORTHLAND.
The anti-GE organisation's chairman, Marty Robinson, said that it was heartening news that the concerns of New Zealanders about the GMO applications had been upheld by the court.
"The cruelty and unregulated exploitation of animals for GE research is not acceptable to most Kiwis. A recent Colmar Brunton poll showed 70% opposition to the genetic engineering of animals," he said.
Dr. Kerry Grundy, Chairman of the Inter Council Working Party (ICWP) on GMOs, last week said it was of serious concern that ERMA had been found in error by the High Court in processing applications relating to transgenic animals, some of which could have ended up in Northland.
"This decision tends to justify, and lend credence to, the work that the ICWP is undertaking on behalf of ratepayers and primary producers in the Northland/Auckland region," he said.
Craig Brown, Chairman of the Northland Regional Council Environment Committee notes: "This is a further instance of those in the position to do a proper job to safeguard us are failing in their duty of care. This incident reinforces the need for all local councils to work collaboratively together to protect our environment."
GE FREE NORTHLAND spokeswoman Zelka Grammer said strong rules regarding GMO land use were needed to ensure Northland remained GE free.
