PUBLIC APPEAL FOR FUNDS

GE Free Northland has driven the campaign in Northland to get our local authorities to act
to protect ratepayers and the environment from GMO land use and to keep our food GE free.
GE Free Northland's campaign has forced central government to admit that
YOU will pay to clean up GMO disasters, not the polluters.
District and Regional councils from Auckland to the north are now with us.
We ask for your support so that we can continue to do the work we do.
We have incurred significant legal costs to date, and we are seeking donations.
Thank you for your support.

HIGH COURT RULES AGAINST ERMA

A Wellington High Court Judge has censored ERMA for accepting an application by AgResearch to continue research on genetically modified cows.

The judge ordered ERMA to set the application aside and said it had erred in law by accepting it.

AgResearch wanted to continue its research into cows which were genetically modified to carry human genes in their milk, and further widen it's investigation to include possums, buffalo, sheep, and guinea pigs.

Councillor Brent Morrissey an Auckland Regional Council (ARC) elected representative on the inter- council working party on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) risk evaluation and options said ERMA had been remiss in its acceptance of the GMO applications by AgResearch.

The ruling sends a strong signal to government that the body it set up to rigorously evaluate applications has not done it's job, Cr Morrissey said.

The Working Party found holes in the law that leave New Zealanders wide open to genetic modification failures and leaks and the ARC knew that 70% of the public did not want genetically engineered animals.

ARC received a number of submissions against genetic modification and a spokesperson said although not directly involved in bringing the matter before the High Court, they have a responsibility to listen to what ratepayers say.

Dr Kerry Grundy chairperson of the working party on GMO's said, "It is of serious concern that ERMA has been found in error under law by the High Court in processing these applications given that some of these transgenic animals could have ended up in the Northland/Auckland region."

Other commentators said ERMA had failed in its duty of care.

The working party will continue to investigate genetic modification and undertake a survey soon to check that it is continuing o represent the public's views on GMO's.

"We believe that ERMA was bullied into accepting applications that should have easily been seen as woefully deficient. We are worried that ERMA is being used by pro-GM interests and is not adequately considering the risk to New Zealanders and New Zealand from the use of GMO's," Cr Morrissey said.
