http://www.indymedia.org.nz/front.php3?article_id=3711&group=webcast Banners and a sack of organic potatoes were what Rodney residents and children used to resist pro-genetic engineering scientists in Leigh this week. The residents staged a peaceful protest against a potentially pro-GE conference, held at the Leigh Sawmill Café from Sunday to Wednesday. A number of anti-GE signs decorated the streets of Leigh, reinforcing the district's status as an organic-friendly region.

Demand for Executive to ban crop trials until effects of GM food on health are studied By Rob Edwards, Environment editor
http://www.sundayherald.com/29821
The Sunday Herald, 8 December 2002 EATING genetically modified (GM) food could give you cancer. That is the stark warning today from one of Scotland's leading experts in tissue diseases.
Dr Stanley Ewen, a consultant histopathologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, says that a cauliflower virus used in GM foods could increase the risk of stomach and colon cancers.
He is calling for the health of people who live near the farm-scale GM crop trials in Aberdeenshire, Ross-shire and Fife to be monitored. Their food and water will be contaminated by GM material, he said, which could hasten the growth of malignant tumours.

Paul Brown, environment correspondent, The Guardian, Tuesday February 5, 2002
The potential health effects of genetically modified foods should be rigorously investigated before allowing them into baby food or to be marketed to pregnant or breast feeding women, the elderly, and those with chronic disease, the Royal Society said yesterday.
The scientists were also concerned that the new generation of GM crops might cause allergies, particularly among farmers or workers in the food industry.
A report published yesterday marked a shift by the country's most eminent scientific body from its positive report on GM food in 1998, and is expected to influence the government's position.

THURSDAY 31 JANUARY 2002
Long-term potential health risks posed by genetically modified (GM) material in food require further investigation before GM technology is commercialised, French food safety authority AFSSA said yesterday. Its position paper shows continuing resistance from French public authorities to any move towards an early end to the EU's moratorium on new GM crop authorisations.
Published in advance of a government-sponsored public debate on GMOs regulation to take place in Paris next week, Afssa argues that current safety testing for foods containing GMOs is insufficient.
Research into the impacts of prolonged exposure must be added to the existing regime, with particular emphasis placed on identifying risks of gradual development of allergic reactions, it says.

Dr. Judy Carman, BSc, BSc (Hons), PhD(Med), MPH
Epidemiologist and Biochemist. Affiliate Senior lecturer, Dept of Public Health. University of Adelaide.
Without public discussion or consent, genetically engineered (GE) versions of soybean, canola, corn, potato, sugarbeet and cotton are currently eaten in Australia and New Zealand. They are widely present in breads, pastries, snack foods, baked products, oils, fried foods, confectionary, soft drinks and small goods casings.
GE plants contain artificially modified genes which are constructed by combining plant genes with different plant genes or genes from completely different organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or animals.
Of any novel substance that may be produced in a GE plant, proteins are of particular concern.
Proteins have the ability to pass through the human gut wall, into the tissues of the body to create toxicological symptoms and other health problems such as food intolerances.
The so-called 'mad cow' disease of cattle is caused by a modified protein which can cause a disease in humans called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease if people eat beef from cattle infected with the modified protein.
All genes are made of a substance known as DNA. The modified DNA in GE plants is of particular concern because it may become incorporated into bacteria in the human gut, or cross the gut wall into the tissues of the body, with unforeseen consequences.

We've all heard the good news about chickens- big player TEGEL has committed to ensuring all its chickens are fed on non-GE poultry feed. But did you know that a new growth hormone made by genetically engineered bacteria has been secretly approved for use on NZ pigs?
Green Party Health Spokesperson Sue Kedgley stated in a February 2002 Press Release:
I have discovered through written Parliamentary Questions and OIA requests that pig farmers can now use an injectable growth hormone to make pigs grow by up to 20 per cent more in the last month of their lives.
"Consumers will not be able to avoid eating pork from pigs that have been administered with the growth hormone because there is no requirement to disclose this on a label", said Ms Kedgley.
