YOU will pay to clean up GMO disasters, not the polluters.
District and Regional councils from Auckland to the north are now with us.
We ask for your support so that we can continue to do the work we do.
We have incurred significant legal costs to date, and we are seeking donations.
Thank you for your support.

Background: The Project for the New American Century.
Posted by: Bart on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 12:10 AM NT
The WTO-GMO link The People versus the Powerful is the oldest story in human history. At no point in history have the Powerful wielded so much control. At no point in history has the active and informed involvement of the People, all of them, been more absolutely required.

William Rivers Pitt: 02/25/03

The Project for the New American Century, or PNAC, is a Washington-based think tank created in 1997. Above all else, PNAC desires and demands one thing: The establishment of a global American empire to bend the will of all nations. They chafe at the idea that the United States, the last remaining superpower, does not do more by way of economic and military force to bring the rest of the world under the umbrella of a new socio-economic Pax Americana.

The fundamental essence of PNAC's ideology can be found in a White Paper produced in September of 2000 entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses:
Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century."
In it, PNAC outlines what is required of America to create the global empire they envision.

According to PNAC, America must:
* Reposition permanently based forces to Southern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East;
* Modernize U.S. forces, including enhancing fighter aircraft, submarine and surface fleet capabilities;
* Develop and deploy a global missile defense system, and develop a strategic dominance of space;
* Control the "International Commons" of cyberspace;
* Increase defense spending to a minimum of 3.8 percent of gross domestic product, up from the 3 percent currently spent.

UN Cartagena "Biosafety Protocol" treaty enters into force
Posted by: Bart on Monday, September 22, 2003 - 12:07 AM NT
The WTO-GMO link The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, signed by 57 nations but not by the United States, entered into force Sept. 11.

The U.N. treaty gives countries greater latitude to reject genetically modified foods. The United Nations ratified the protocol in 2000, and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is urging the implement it.

Under the treaty, genetically modified food exporters must provide more information about GMO products such as soybeans or corn.

Importing countries may also reject GMO imports or donations if they believe the genetically altered foods pose a risk to traditionally grown foods, undermine local cultures or harm biodiversity.

Note: [New Zealand has also NOT signed the protocol - Editor]

Biting The Hand That Bleeds

The WTO-GMO link Posted on 19-9-2003 by Alan Marston

From: http://www.pl.net/6business/tinble.htm

Successive governments in New Zealand have toed the line on international trade and as everyone with a smidgen of detached observation foresaw, that line was strung out in Cancun and has hung New Zealanders out to dry. Free trade was, is and always will be a cover for commercial colonisation which if unsuccessful is quickly followed by armed attack.

The Genetically Modified Bomb
Posted by: Bart on Monday, September 22, 2003 - 12:03 AM NT
The WTO-GMO link by Thom Hartmann

Published September 10, 2003 by CommonDreams.org

"Advanced forms of biological warfare that can 'target' specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool."

-- (p72) "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century." (September 2000) - by The Project for a New American Century.

Imagine a bomb that only kills Caucasians with red hair. Or short people. Or Arabs. Or Chinese.

Now imagine that this new bomb could be set off anywhere in the world, and that within a matter of days, weeks, or months it would kill every person on the planet who fits the bomb's profile, although the rest of us would be left standing.

And the bomb could go off silently, without anybody realizing it had been released - or even where it was released - until its victims started dying in mass numbers.

Who would imagine such a thing?

Paul Wolfowitz, for one. William Kristol for another. And, history shows, when the men who define U.S. military policy from the shadows set their sights on something, it's worthy of our attention.

Note: In order to accomplish Genetic Engineering, a virus specifically designed to inject new DNA has to be engineered first.. a common virus used for this is based on SV40, or Simian Virus 40. SV40 is a dangerous virus and has been found as a contaminant in the Polio Vaccine made from infected Rhesus monkeys, and is strongly suspected to cause cancer in humans. Scientists studying the SV40 - cancer link have found the virus at the centre of a large number of different types of cancer growths.

Trade Liberalisation Network Dead Wrong, Yet Again
Posted by: Bart on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - 03:03 AM NT
The WTO-GMO link Friday, 1 August 2003, 4:46 pm
Press Release: Arena

"The Trade Liberalisation Network director Suse Reynolds accuses us of speaking on behalf of developing countries without any mandate", says Dr Jane Kelsey, editor of a new critique of the World Trade Organisation "Free Trade at Any Price? The WTO Doha Round" published by the Action, Research and Education Network of Aotearoa (ARENA) yesterday.

"Even a cursory glance shows that Free Trade at Any Price? is designed as a vehicle for those countries to speak for themselves. Pithy quotes that appear on every page include:

On the impacts for the poor: "We cannot have a free market in which the rich are free to squeeze the economic life out of the poor" (Percy Makombe, Southern and East African Trade Information Network (SEATINI) 2003)

On the role of Mike Moore: "Although the [WTO] secretariat is supposed to be neutral, the previous Director General Mike Moore himself played a role in threatening 'stubborn' delegates in Doha. In one such instance, Moore asked the official if he wanted to be consulted or terminated". (Aileen Kwa, Power Politics at the WTO, Focus on the Global South, 2002)

Jane Kelsey Speech at GE Free Protest
Posted by: Bart on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - 02:29 AM NT
The WTO-GMO link GE FREE RALLY 16 NOVEMBER 2002

Address by Dr. Jane Kelsey, Professor of Law at Auckland University and member of Action, Research and Education Network of Aotearoa (ARENA)
http://www.indymedia.org.nz/front.php3?article_id=1885&group=webcast

Question: What does so-called 'free trade' have to do with GE?

Answer: Absolutely everything!

No to GE means No the World Trade Organisation!

That was a key message of the protests against the WTO in Sydney this week, although the media seemed determined to keep the actual issues off the front page.

Why is the WTO important? Because its global rules can lead to heavy punishments on governments who dare to introduce GE-free laws, to impose bans on GE imports, to require labelling of GM foods, refuse patenting of life forms, to guarantee indigenous control over taonga.

This is not about 'trade' in the old fashioned sense. The WTO imposes rules on patents, investment, agriculture, services, environmental regulation, and more.

That's why agribusinesses, drug companies, biotech companies and other transnationals are so keen to get even tighter agreements at the WTO, and similar 'free trade' agreements between countries, like the one with the US that our government seems prepared to go to war to secure.
